5 out of 5 stars Nyko Wii Frontman works great for me   December 1, 2008

I saw an amazing price on the Nyko Wii Frontman guitar controller and thought for sure something so much cheaper than the original Guitar Hero guitar would be inferior. But at the price (and with the other reviews) I figured it was worth a try. Well I'm happy to report my fears were thus far unfounded. The guitar performs great for me - although I'm not a Guitar Hero master. If you are used to the official guitar you will notice some differences:

1. The neck is not removable, so it is less convenient for those who maybe need to travel or store the guitar in tighter spaces
2. The + and - buttons are on the opposite side of the whammy bar - just cosmetic to me
3. The whammy bar's up/down orientation adjustment is a little stiffer than my original - I think that the stiffness is preferable as it doesn't bump out of alignment as easily
4. Obviously you can see it is a different style - I like having two different guitars than two identical ones
5. The Frontman comes with a replaceable pick guard for two color options. I don't really care about this much, but it gives a little more variety. The "pick" tool to remove the guard is conveniently housed inside the Wii controller bay.

I read in some reviews that this guitar is smaller. That is not true of mine - they are the same size.

I am very satisfied with this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Decent replacment or additional guitar   December 1, 2008

The "Frontman" guitars are a decent replacement or additional guitar to use for your Guitar Hero game. The unit itself feels and looks a bit "cheaper" then the regular GH or RB guitars but still work just fine. The buttons feel a bit "spongy" to me, again they work fine but if your used to a GH or RB guitar it might take a little getting used to. They are currently lsited to work with Guitar Hero III and I know from experience they work fine with Guitar Hero Aerosmith. They may not work with Rock Band, check Nyko's website for that. One nice thing is both the white and yellow models come with a changeable pick guard so if you buy two of the same color you can still change ones pick guard and have them look a little different.

For the price these are worth picking up, especially if you have one guitar currently and want a second for two player playing. It also makes a good backup or travel guitar since the price is relatively low.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar works great.   November 29, 2008

4 out of 5 stars Nice alternative, only slight disadvantages over official controllers   November 28, 2008

I got the Nyko Frontman for the same reason you're looking at it, most likely - it's cheaper than the official RedOctane guitars. I'm usually wary of third party controllers, as they're usually lacking in quality, but I took a chance with this one and I'm glad I did. It works just as well as the official guitars, though it feels a bit different, as the buttons are more rounded. That's not a bad thing, either. I've found that some people actually prefer it.
One downside I can think of might not even apply to most people, but in my case, I travel with my guitars a lot. With the official guitar, you can remove the neck and break them into two pieces, but you can't do that with this one. I usually carry them around in a duffel bag, so since I can't break this one apart, the only way to get it to fit is to have the neck sticking out of the bag. It wasn't a deal-breaker for me, though. You also can't use the colorful faceplates that RedOctane makes, as their shape is completely different. It comes with a yellow or pink faceplate in addition to the white one, though why you would want to use either of those is beyond me. You're already holding a silly plastic guitar, and you want to give it a pastel faceplate?
Also, I only have Guitar Hero III. I have no idea if this guitar works for Rock Band, so you might want to do some research on that if you want to use it for that game. I'm assuming it works for Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero World Tour, though, even though I don't have them.
Don't get scared off by the box or manual saying anything about requiring batteries. The only batteries you will need are already in your Wii remote. My guess is that Nyko used the same template for guitars for PS2/PS3/Xbox 360 as well, and those need batteries.

Overall, it's a great guitar and a nice alternative to the official models. Enjoy rocking out!
