Sweet baby Jesus, we thank you for blessing Will Ferrell and Adam McKay with the talent to create a NASCAR comedy as hilarious as Talladega Nights. The so-called "Ballad of Ricky Bobby" is hardly flawless in fact it's not always firing on all cylinders but with comedy star Ferrell and director McKay still hot from the success of their previous comedy hit Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, most of this 108-minute spoof of oval-track racing is so knee-slappin' funny that you can't help but surrender to the stupidity. |
Obviously, Ferrell's the shining star, and his portrayal of lead-footed pit-crew-member-turned-#1 NASCAR champion Ricky "I Wanna Go Fast" Bobby (how can you not love that name?) is spot-on perfect, righteously spoofing the entirety of NASCAR culture without insulting its oft-ridiculed roots in redneck bootlegging of a bygone era. You could even argue that Talladega Nights is truer to NASCAR than Tom Cruise's Days of Thunder, and it's certainly more entertaining, especially when you add John C. Reilly as Ricky's life-long pal, teammate, and eventual rival Cal Naughton, Jr. (together they're nicknamed "Shake 'n Bake"), and Sacha Baron Cohen (from Da Ali G Show and Borat) as gay French "Formula Un" driver-turned NASCAR rival Jean Girrard, to a stellar cast including Molly Shannon, Greg Germann, Amy Adams and Michael Clarke Duncan. Sure, it's mostly a showcase for Ferrell's loud, over-the-top antics and nonsensical non sequiturs (like cameo appearances by Elvis Costello and Mos Def), but with Ferrell behind the wheel, Talladega Nights rolls into victory lane with fuel to spare, and there's one final bit of comedy (with a tip of the hat to William Faulkner) for those who sit through the credits. --Jeff Shannon Stills from Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby(click for larger image) More NASCAR and Talladega Nights at Amazon.com The Calendar | On blu-ray | NASCAR on PSP | Our NASCAR Store | NASCAR The Imax Experience | Speed, Guts, and Glory Book |

No parking November 7, 2008 Steven H. Serna (San Antonio, TX) This movie was just not funny. Not even stupid funny. It was more insulting on many different levels. I wonder if the screen writer is Jewish, because they have a thing for making fun of everything Christian. I know it's a comedy but it seems a lot of Jews go out of their way to bash Jesus and Christianity. For example Sarah Silverman, Family Guy, American Dad among others. Some things that absolutely made no sense whatsoever. First, Ricky Bobby is kicked out of his own house by his ex-wife and best friend with their two sons. Imagine a divorce court that gives all the wealth, houses, cars, etc. and absolutely no child support for the parent who has custody. Second, the French guy assaults and breaks the arm of Ricky Bobby. No law suit for taking his livelihood. No arrest. No deportation. Also the token black guy bit.
Great Will Ferrell Film September 23, 2008 TTTLane (La Plata, MD USA) I bought this for my son who's 15 and a big fan of Will Ferrell. He already owns the DVD but likes having movies to travel with his PSP. This is one of his favorite movies and full of great laughs.
Will Ferrell At His Hilarious Best!!! September 9, 2008 Jigsaw (Kentucky) Another funny movie with the comedy of Will Ferrell. Ricky Bobby used to have it all, then a French racer, Jean beats him. His wife leaves him for his best friend. So, Ricky and his two sons have to go live at his mom's house. Ricky dad shows up after 25 years to train him to race again. Ricky and Jean have a rematch. If you love racing, comedy, and Will Ferrell, you'll love TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY!!!

This was not to my liking. Not my type of film, or humor. I watched about thirty minutes of it, or less. I found it inane and a waste of my time.
Fast, Loose And Very Funny August 11, 2008 Joseph J. Finn (Chicago, IL USA) Okay, this has to be one of the most one-trick-pony movies I've ever seen and yet I found myself laughing a good bit at a lot of it. Not because of especially good writing, but because almost every supporting actor steals the movie on their own; Sascha Baron Cohen pushes his stereotype so far it turns into something wonderfully weird (lordy, does he pour himself into his comic creations), Jane Lynch is a hell of a lot of fun as usual and so on and so forth (plus a small sexy turn by Amy Adams). Probably nothing I'll ever watch again but at at least I got to see Gary Cole explain quite logically why there's a cougar in the car.
